Here Be Horses

Back in the day when undiscovered lands were a thing, cartographers got creative with their maps, filling in blank spots with all kinds of interesting creatures. Hence the term ‘here there be dragons,’ meaning ‘we have no idea what’s over here, so let’s have some fun with it.’

I’m not sure that’s really what went through their heads, but that, at least, is what I would be thinking.

Here in the 21st century, there are no more undiscovered lands, no more blank spots on the terrestrial map. Even so, the spirit of exploration hasn’t died, leaving curious types wondering what’s left to discover.

Well, the answer is plenty…if you look hard enough. Case in point: the wonderfully obscure Fabius Page Horse and Mule Cemetery.

No entrance. No path. No signs. Let your GPS try to guide you there. I dare you.

I visited this place with my daughter recently, and since she didn’t find it as wildly exciting as I did, I told her, ‘think of it this way…there is no one at your school who has ever visited this place. I guarantee you.’

I realized later that I had attempted to inspire her using a variation of the Star Trek ethos, to ‘boldly go where no man has gone before.’ With the slight modification, perhaps, ‘to boldly go where normal people never go.’

Yes, there are no more undiscovered lands, but hidden in the cracks and chinks of our tamed and overmapped globe are wonderful places like the Fabius Page Horse and Mule Cemetery. So get outside, fight your way through those scrublands behind dumpsters littered with empty soda cans and discarded tires, and experience the thrill of discovery!

But if it’s too much trouble, just be a couch potato and watch the video of my expedition. Enjoy!
