Cryptid Cuisine

If you ever find yourself in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, you’re probably there to visit the world-famous Mothman Museum.

If you have never heard of the Mothman legend….well, you should have. There are some historically important personages everyone should just know about, and like Beethoven, Winston Churchill, and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine, Mothman happens to be one of them.

Still, if you’re in the dark, the museum’s website can shed some light on the subject:

IN NOVEMBER 1966, EERIE THINGS BEGAN TO OCCUR IN THE SMALL TOWN OF POINT PLEASANT. STRANGE LIGHTS IN THE SKY . . . MYSTERIOUS “MEN IN BLACK” . . . AND A FLYING RED-EYED CREATURE CALLED MOTHMAN CHANGED THIS SMALL WEST VIRGINIA TOWN . . . FOREVER.

Pleased to make your acquaintance!

The museum is small but packed with fascinating exhibits, and after exploring its many corners you’ll likely develop an appetite. If so, I’d recommend a nearby Mexican restaurant called ‘Rio Bravo 2.’ Why, you ask? Because they serve the Mothman Burrito, which is both amusing and delicious.

After polishing this off, I couldn’t help but wonder…do other Cryptids get their own special restaurant dishes? The question called for some serious research, which, I’m glad to say, bore fruit.

CRYPTID CUISINE DISH #2 – Sasquatch Subs!

Whoa! This thing looks like it would eat YOU! If there’s anyone out there from Stanwood, Washington, please let me know if you’ve ever tried one of these monsters, and let me know how you survived the encounter.

CRYPTID CUISINE DISH #3 – The Nessy Burger!

It made sense that a Bigfoot-themed restaurant would be located in Washington State, but a Loch Ness-themed restaurant in California?

Oh, well, let’s just roll with it. Nessy wouldn’t be offended.

Nessy Burgers also has Nessy Dogs, for those who just can’t get enough of the world’s most famous cryptid.

CRYPTID CUISINE DISH #4 – ???

One of the world’s lesser-known cryptids (and my favorite by far), is the Van Meter Visitor, a space pterodactyl with a glowing unicorn horn.

Yes, this is my actual shirt.

Van Meter, Iowa is a pretty small town, and from what I could see, they only have two places to eat. The larger is a restaurant called 5th Quarter Bar and Grill.

Unfortunately, this establishment has chosen to go with a sports theme rather than a VMV theme. UGH! Talk about missed opportunities!

To their credit, 5th Quarter has made an oblique nod to the Visitor by including this item on their menu:

Honestly, though, I’m still on the fence as to whether it’s better to have this on the menu or have nothing at all. Van Meter Monster? Come on guys. You live there. You should know better.

I’m considering writing 5th Quarter to ask them to include a REAL VMV-themed menu item. Some suggestions….

  • Vichyssoise a la Van Meter Visitor
  • Van Meter Visitor Vermicelli
  • Van Meter Visitor Vegetable Soup
  • Hungry Visitor’s Venison Sausage Platter

It took me like two minutes to come up with this list, so this should be really easy. If they reply, I’ll let you know what they say. Cryptids, after all, can be great for business.

And if the folks at 5th Quarter don’t believe me, I’ll give them the number for Rio Bravo 2.

Take me to your feeder!
